IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE CRFU

In 2024 Junior & Teenage Rugby is changing to School Years rather than Under 12, U13 etc. The key reasons for this change are:

  • Transition through club/secondary school rugby system with peers (streamlined through Year 7, 8 & 9, rather than disrupted by U13 being a mix of Year 8&9). This is typically experienced at U12s Grades where the Year 8 players (born in the first quarter of the year) move to Secondary School at the end of that season, leaving behind their Year 7 teammates for the following year to play U13s with reduced numbers. This creates issues for clubs, coaches and managers of those teams and decreases the quality of experience for the participants as they lose up to 25% of their team the following year.
  • Ease of understanding for parents & participants, we need to make rugby simpler for those who don’t currently participate.
  • Ability to play with friends from school.

The primary determinate for what grade a player will be in is their school year, then any weight limit will be applied in areas that have this. If a player is exceptionally old or young for their school year there will be a process to manage this and this will be distributed by each sub-union Rugby Manager.

What does this mean for existing teams/systems:

  • We have had clubs look at the impact of this change and the disruption to existing teams is not large, there will be a few players who need to change teams to match their school year, and some that will be young for the team they have been with. The clubs that we worked with estimated the number of children involved in this to be very small.
  • Grades were updated in the Sporty system prior to Christmas and the final changes made last week. Players who registered prior to this will have their grade in their form updated when they are placed into teams by club administrators or this can be done manually by an administrator.
  • School Year has also been added to this years registration form.

Are the grades we offer changing?

  • Sub Unions have made some tweaks to the grades offered to provide a better participant experience and meet the needs of their local communities, the grades being offered in 2024 are detailed below, there will be a separate communication about Women & Girls Grades coming out in the next few days.

What if a player is not at school?

  • Teenagers who are no longer in the school system can be placed in teams based on the school year they would be in if they had remained at school
